Day Sails with Southampton Sailing Club

Day sails are organised group trips for members who want to sail beyond the immediate area around the club. They are a chance to explore Southampton Water and nearby parts of the Solent in company, with plans made around suitable tides, weather and the experience of those taking part.

What to expect

Each day sail is planned in advance and published on the club calendar. The event details will usually include the meeting time, planned destination, expected route, sign-up information and any specific instructions for the day.

Before going afloat, members should expect a briefing covering the route, weather, tides, safety arrangements and any limits on where the group will sail. Plans may change at short notice if conditions are unsuitable.

Day sails may involve dinghies, cruisers or both, depending on the event. Dinghy trips will normally stay within a suitable range of the club and may include safety-boat support where required. Cruiser rallies or mixed events may go further afield, depending on the destination and the boats involved.

Who can take part?

Day sails are primarily for club members. Dinghy helms should normally hold RYA Dinghy Level 2 or have equivalent experience. Members who would like to crew do not need the same level of qualification, but should arrange this in advance with a helm or skipper.

If you are unsure whether a particular day sail is suitable for you, please speak to the event organiser before signing up.

Where we may go

Destinations vary depending on the weather, tide times and type of boats taking part. Possible destinations may include:

• Queen Victoria Country Park or the Netley area
• Eling and Goatee Beach
• Calshot
• Hythe or Weston
• The Hamble area
• Local beaches, creeks, anchorages or nearby sailing clubs
• Longer cruiser destinations around the Solent where suitable

Not every destination will be suitable for every event. The final route will always depend on the conditions and the judgement of the organiser on the day.

What to bring

Members should come prepared for several hours outdoors and for conditions to change during the day. Useful items include:

• Suitable sailing clothing for the weather
• Waterproofs or a spray top
• Buoyancy aid or lifejacket, as appropriate
• Footwear suitable for launching and sailing
• Spare warm layers
• A change of clothes and towel
• Water and food for the day
• Sun cream, sunglasses and a hat in warmer weather
• Sailing gloves if you use them
• Any personal medication
• A waterproof bag for valuables
• A charged mobile phone, ideally in a waterproof case

For dinghy events, expect to get wet. For cruiser events, the skipper may provide more specific guidance on what to bring.

How to join a day sail

Upcoming day sails are listed in the Calendar of Events. Members should register through the relevant event page where sign-up is available.

Safety and changes to plans

All day sails are weather and tide dependent. Events may be changed, shortened, postponed or cancelled if conditions are not suitable. Members taking part are expected to follow the organiser's instructions and sail within the agreed plan for the day.
